A last minute change of venue due to the particularly unsettled weather saw us have the BBQ at John Cappit's Farm in Northorpe this year. Here we enjoyed some fantastic food cooked as ever by Terry and Margaret, and were able to shelter from the chill evening wind and occasional shower in John's Barn.. Thanks must go to John and Clare for allowing us to use this facility, to those who brought their treasured cars / lorries along for us all to see and to everyone who first helped set up and then clear away after the evening.

May 2007
Steve Hall, the local MG specialist, gave a very interesting talk about the background to his business and his racing activities.
April 2007
Steve Parrish entertained a large audience with his irreverent, but dedicated, approach to the racing scene. It must rank as one of the most amusing evenings that we have had.
March 2007
The speaker was Simon Pullan who is an experienced GT driver as well as driving Caterhams, Group C endurance cars and TVRs.
Many members of the club came to the visit to the JCB World Headquarters at Rocester where we given a guided tour of their production lines.
February 2007
The speaker at our meeting was the BTCC driver – Fiona Leggate who gave us some insight into racing at this level and the continual struggle for money. January 2007 The club started the year with what has become our traditional social gathering in January. We showed a video reliving the excellent day last June when we celebrated our 10th anniversary with our Classic Car and Bike Show in Bourne. A group of club members had a fantastic evening out at Langer and as per usual the kart racing was extremely competitive, especially as the facility now has some new, more powerful, karts for us to test our skills (or lack of) on.
December 2006 Meeting Our Christmas meetings just get better, we returned to the HO scale racing (smaller than scalextric) format that has been the mainstay of our christmas's for many years. This is the one opportunity that our members get each year to go head to head with each other at high speed (without the repair bills). To compliment the excellent evenings racing we thank the committee (well mainly their better halfs) for an excellent buffet. September meeting 2006 Ron Champion gave an interesting talk about how the Locost car came about and his personal history. May Meeting 2004 Tony Jacobs gave a very interesting talk about his life behind the camera with the BBC.
5th October 2003 Today saw members of the club and some members from the Porsche Owners Club meet at the Langer Kart and Quad Centre www.lkqc.com for an afternoons racing. Following a short practice session the 9 two man teams took to the grid for the one hour endurance race. After a first lap incident which slowed the leading drivers and a black flag (Stop and go penalty and caution) for the leading team on lap nine, everyone soon got to grips with the the matter at hand and the lap times started to fall. Most teams opted for the 15 minutes per driver strategy (F1 teams would have been proud) which saw the race lead change with alarming regularity. At the finish of the race three teams were all on 121 laps with the team of Doug and Javon Balderson winning by a margin of only 19 seconds. What made this victory even better was that this team also an extra pit stop when their kart broke down.

Batemans Brewery - September 17th 2003
This long awaited evening was enjoyed by a group of members who travelled to Wainfleet to visit the home of Batemans Brewery. The evening included a very intresting tour of the brewhouse, an evening meal and of course Beer (in moderation of course). All agreed that they enjoyed a very relaxed and educational evening.
-------
September 2003 Meeting
The club was joined for the evening by Martyn Moore, editor of Classic Car magazine who gave a talk about how the magazine is put together. Our thanks to Martyn for a most entertaining evening.
-------
August 2003 Meeting
Due to
holidays and the time of year the August meeting was a low key event
with the available members getting together for a relaxed social evening. -------
London Classic Car Show - March 15th
Alexander Palace was an ideal setting for the Classic Car Show, with two halls full of concors quality classic cars and of course a hall for the Auto Jumble. A group of members took a pilgrimage to the show and as per usual with a club outing the sun shone as brightly as the polish on the cars. The show had something for everyone from the one make owners clubs ( Porsche, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ford Anglia, Singer, Citroen 2CV et al.) to the cars for sale areas with superb classic models from Jaguar to an Austin Princess. Two club members spend an unhealthy amount of time trying to justify to others the £75,000 price tag for what they described as "the best example of a Dodge Charger R/T with Hemi engine, this side of the atlantic".... I said there was something for everyone!
Photographs will be available on the photo pages soon.
-------
Club Meeting March 2003
Well an organized quiz night, 6 teams and several round of questions made for an interesting night. Richard and David came up with questions relating to Motor Sport, Motoring, General Knowledge a picture round and what can best be described as crossword clues to models of cars without the crossword attached. After all the fun only one point separated the top two teams, closer than a F1 championship!
-------
Heritage Motor Centre - 23rd Feb. 2003
The glorious weather and luxury coach travel to Warwickshire set the tone for the day, when a group of members visited the home of a museum dedicated the the history of all the companies that at some point became British Leyland. The museum has exhibits from cars from the early 1900's up to the latest Landrover and Range Rover models. The road of history showed some of the highlights from 100 years of motoring history which allowed you to relate models of cars to the motoring regulations that appeared at these times.
As well as the static displays the centre also has conference facilities which on the day of our visit were being used by a Fiat owners club and the "Landcrab" register so a trawl around the car park threw up some interesting vehicles.
The Highlight for some was the chance to be driven around the centre's off road track in a Landrover. The track includes obstacles such a 1m deep water and some of the most terrifying drops and banked corners.
The centre is built alongside the Ford development and test track on the site of a former airbase. The guided tour of the centre's function room and roof unfortunately did not get us the opportunity to have a sneak preview of Fords secret facility due to the high banks around the old runways.
This is a great day out for anyone who has ever owned anything made by the BL group or their predecessors.
Photographs will be available on the photo pages soon.
------- Club Meeting February
2003 Well what a great nights
entertainment…. Our guest speaker for the
evening was Tim Sugden, twice British GT champion, BTCC racer, team owner,
scholarship founder, comedian and all round good guy. Tim gave us a vivid
account of his racing career punctuated with some great tales of racing
events and larger than life characters, which had the crowd in fits of
laughter.
From those early days in
karting, through to unique experiences like taking on the factory teams at Le
Mans with a private entry, Tim has proven that with hard work and a
determined attitude you can achieve an amazing career. This is something that Tim
is giving back to the sport in his scholarship scheme. The scheme gives
people, some of whom have never driven a competition car, the opportunity to
see if they have what it takes. The overall winners in previous years have
gone on to further their racing careers with two of them currently racing as
professional drivers. When asked about the
forthcoming season, Tim said he wants to do more racing himself and has
several exciting options open. We would all like to thank
Tim for a fantastic evening and will follow his season with great interest.
------- Autosport International
12/1/2003 A group of 17 club members
and guests braved the sub zero temperatures of Saturday 11th
January and climbed aboard the coach for our 6th trip to the
Autosport International Show at Birmingham’s NEC The show is always a good
start to the racing year, and members were able to focus on their particular
interests, and gain ideas to help them plan their forthcoming years
motorsport. There were many
famous names at the show, Murray Walker, David Coulthard and Martin Brundle
to name a few. These made
themselves available to the shows visitors to chat and sign autographs. Action could be seen in the live
arena where stars of rally stage and circuit showed off their abilities. All in all a great show, and a feature
that is now a regular on the BMRC calendar.
------- The club got the new year off
to a flying start when we were visited by John Bladon for our first meeting
of 2003. John entertained us with a talk about his racing in historic formula
such as the Thoroughbred Grand Prix and Formula Ford. John gave us a great insight
into his passion for racing the powerful Surtees F5000 and F1 cars and of
course at the opposite end of the scale, but just as much fun, his Merlyn
Formula Fords. Following the talk we were
treated to a great selection of pictures and artwork that John has collected
with relation to his cars.
------- December saw our annual slot
car racing and Christmas buffet night. Once again we are indebted to Nick
Sismey of D.H.O.R.C for coming across from Derby with a new track layout to
test our intrepid members. The racing consisted of H:O scale racing cars
hurtling around the four lane track around the Red Hall at high speeds,
supposedly in the control of about 30 club members. Following the heats, the final
became a hotly contested event with the four drivers aiming to take the
trophies. After an impressive performance Neil Bannister took the honours
with Richard Bostock and Bob Close taking the other podium places.
------- In November we were privileged
to have Graham Presley visit the club to entertain us with a talk about his
racing in the Alfa Romeo Championship. The very entertaining talk was
finished of with a lively question and answer session, which saw the meeting
to another late close. November was also a good month
for the BMRC Le-Mans challenge team. The annual event held at Rolls Royce in
Derby see 8 teams from around the world compete on a 230ft replica of the
famous circuit with H:O scale racing cars measuring less than a couple of
inches long. This was the third attempt at the event for the BMRC team, whose
members only race twice each year. Considering the experience of the
opposition the teams seventh place and new record for the amount of laps
covered in the 24hours was a very commendable performance.
-------- October saw the members take a
night off from motor racing and turn their attention to Greyhound racing. The
Peterborough Greyhound stadium provided an excellent venue for the members
who enjoyed an superb meal and the chance to have a small flutter without
having to move from the comfort of their table. At the end of the night
no-one managed to win a fortune but all went away with a little more
knowledge of betting form (pick the name that sounds the best) and a promise
to do better when we visit again in the spring. The October meeting at the Red
Hall proved a very popular event with all who attended. The guest speaker for the evening was
Mike
Fairholme, “Helmet
Designer to the Rich and Famous”. Members were treated to an insight into
this unusual art form and even had the chance to see some examples of Mike’s
work. October also saw the club,
paying visit to Silverstone for the HSCC Championship finals. The club was
invited to use the Silverstone Racing Club facilities included the “Warm
Clubhouse” and “Hot Meals”, both essential for October meetings and the use
of the Clubs own grandstand, which gave excellent viewing of all the action
in the complex. The weather was quite mild for October, which coupled to the
varied types of racing and the full grids made for some of the most exciting
racing of the season. All the members who attended the meeting thoroughly
enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the paddock, excellent viewing from the
grandstand and the warm welcome and hospitality of the Silverstone Racing
Club. Thanks must go to Janet and David for organising a brilliant day out.
“The only way to go racing in autumn” was one comment that was made.
------- We had our now annual change
from motor racing at the September 2002 meeting, when we welcomed Aviation
Historian, Jim Shortland as our guest speaker. Jim is the Official Historian
for the 617 Dambusters Squadron, and presented a lecture entitled : The Dams
Raid - The True Story. This was a fantastically entertaining evening, with a
huge turn-out.
------- August was an "open"
meeting, with videos and chat and in July we had our traditional barbeque for
which, this year, we temporarily relocated to John Cappitt's farm in Northorpe
due to potential inclement weather - and a wise decision it was too! We had a
racing simulator which was a F3000 chassis mounted with a PC and needed to be
protected from the rain, and about 10pm the heavens opened in a big way. In June, Mike Broard, former
international rally co-driver entertained us with his tales, and for May, the
meeting was actually a trip to view the superb facilities at the nearby
Rockingham Motor Speedway. We also visited the Lola factory in May too - a busy
month! Earlier 2002 highlights were a
trip to local Radical Motorsport in Peterborough and talks by Colin Ingram, a
Porsche Classic Cup Racer, and Dr McGregor with his slide shoe depicting
Raymond Mays' life. We certainly finished 2001
with a hugely popular evening. Our 3rd annual DHORC-organised slot-car racing
evening and Christmas buffet was combined with a visit by Channel 4 presenter
and World Rally "Queen" Penny Mallory, who kept us entertained all
evening, particularly with her enlightening "half-time" talk.
A huge thank you to Nick and
Phil of the DHORC for
providing the usual excellent track and facilities and keeping us all
organised.
Neil Bannister managed to just
hold on to his title, but was pushed hard all the way by another huge entry,
including Penny herself (above), who then presented the trophy to the
Champion!
Find out more about Penny at
her website at www.pennymallory.co.uk
and the Derby HO Racing Club at www.dhorc.freeserve.co.uk.
Slightly off the motor sport
track, but a fascinating insight into the glorious BBMF and their wonderful
flying machines. For full details of the Memorial Flight, visit the official
website at www.bbmf.co.uk.
With the cancellation of Penny
Mallory for the September meeting, we took the opportunity to visit (at long
last) the Raymond Mays Exhibition at Baldocks Mill. Those that came all had a
thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The Club had a very successful
barbecue in the grounds of The Red Hall in July. Around 60 people turned out
for a dry if somewhat chilly evening, and everyone enjoyed good food, good
company and a nice selection of vehicles, including the working jet powered
tractor of Neal Davis from local tractor pulling team, Riot racing. Neal
returned to the club for the October meeting giving an insight into his
former career of bomb disposal among other things .. the usual
"riotous" evening was had by all.
The Club took a rest from
motorsport in June and enjoyed a wonderful slide presentation by Keith Kimber
and Tania Brown, a couple who had travelled continuously by motorcycle around
the world for over 16 years. Keith and Tania showed some stunning photographs
of their travels and had many stories to tell about the different cultures
they encountered along the way. In all, they circled the world twice, and
anyone interested in booking the intrepid duo for their own club, please
contact any committee member . In May, we concentrated on
Karting when we welcomed Double Ex-World Champion Tim Parrott from Crowland.
Tim took successive world Superkart titles in 1989 and 1990, and is now
helping his son Jason start on his motorsport career. The meeting was of
great interest and thanks to Tim (and Jason) for a thoroughly entertaining
and insightful evening.
Tim is pictured above (second
from left) helping club members understand the finer points of chassis
set-up. Club Members were given an
insight into one local business when Mark Hood from Putoline Oils came to
talk at our April Meeting. Mark gave a very indepth presentation about his
Company, and concentrated particularly on the differences between car and
motorcycle oils, and the way modern oils are blended for a particular
engine's needs. The Club were deeply shocked
to hear of the tragic and untimely death of Mark Hood on Saturday 28th April,
and wish to send their sincere condolences to Mark's family. Our March 2001 meeting was a
talk by Former F1 driver Martin Donnelly (below left), who gave everyone a
wonderful evening with memories good and bad of his racing career, including
his 243mph Nissan drive at Le Mans and of course his all too brief F1
experience which ended prematurely at Jerez in 1991. His insight into current
and recent British F1 drivers and his days with Eddie Jordan made for a
superb evening.
The aim of the Club is to
provide its Members with an opportunity to experience parts of Motor racing
that they could not achieve as individuals. We arrange visits to motor racing
teams, manufacturers and museums. Where possible, we organize a guest speaker
for each Club Night. The speaker can be from all forms and levels of motor
racing, and previous speakers have included : Visits have included, Jordan
Grand Prix, Arrows Grand Prix, Lotus, Aston Martin, The Donington Collection,
MDR at Milton Keynes, Pilbeam Racing Designs, and Hall and Fowler at
Folkingham Airfield. We run a regular trip to the
Autosport Show at Birmingham's NEC each January, and hold a Barbecue in the
Summer within the grounds of the Red Hall, with a display of interesting
vehicles.
About twelve members enjoyed a
day at Gardner Douglas Sports Cars in August 2000, when they were given a
walkabout around the excellent facilities at Long Bennington. The company
produce a bespoke range of exciting sports cars which can either be built as
a kit, or supplied ready assembled. A group of around 20 club
members enjoyed a guided tour of Castrol Honda's headquarters (below) where
they were shown a short video detailing the history of the Castrol - Honda
connection, and were then shown around the workshops where several bikes were
being prepared for the first Grand Prix of the season.
We also undertake fundraising
for both Motorsport and local charities. Copyright © 2002- 2003 Bourne Motor Racing
